yeah, those screen tops you get at the pet store are way too fine. chicken fencing or rabbit fencing are perfect size, rabbit fencing is a bit smaller...I believe 1/4". Chicken fencing is around an inch wide. Canadian Tire sells them in rolls in the gardening section. I am sure Home Depot has them, but I couldn't find any.
regarding the actual bulb, I believe we have the 5.0 compact bulb, along with a separate UVA basking bulb. both bulbs need to be pointing on the basking area directly and the temp should be monitored, as the UVA light will produce heat. we have a stick on thermometer in the basking area.
you could use the 10.0 UVB bulb. It gives off more UVB rays, but I think either is fine as long as there is plenty of exposure. A timer is also good for the lights, putting them on a day/night cycle so you don't have to remember to do so. walmart sells timer/powerstrips for $12.
lighting is definitely the most confusing thing for me and I am still learning. :)
