It's hard to tell in the pics... Does he have a little red / orange / orangish - yellow on the side of his face?

I'd say he's a red eared slider (RES).

I don't agree, B. In the first picture you can see a glint of his ear.... the color tells otherwise. It's yellow... And there are certain qualities about his shell... I've never seen a turt like that... :headscratch: :hmm:   :Dunno:

Looks like more pictures might be needed to tell. I would try to get a clear shot of the side of his head. And also of the other side of his shell (the bottom) but do not flip him upside down in water, do it on a dry surface making sure to be gentle of course.

Looks like a red eared slider or yellow belly...   definitely needs more pictures of the sides of his face.

He's a cutie though!

I don't know for sure either but he is so super cute and tiny.  I was thinking slider of some sort.  Where did you get him?

What a tiny (and totally ADORABLE) little turt!!

I'm guessing an RES and possibly YBS mix... With the prominent markings on the plastron (bottom shell) there has to be strong RES or some type of slider influence. Even though the "ears" are not red, that doesn't mean it's not an RES. Many young RES have only yellow on their ears.

In any event he's a cutie!!! And we want to help you keep him as healthy as possible!!

Please read over the sticky topics (those at the top of each section) and as many posts as you can. We are here to help you with any questions!!

Thank u!! He stole my heart right away. My parents went xmas shopping at the mall and outside there was a stand with a bunch of these little guys. The guy totally lied to my parents!! He said that they live in these tiny little buckets with fish rock, dont get any bigger than a dollar piece and eat one pellet a day(he told them he will give them enough for a yr). So of course my parents bought him for me because they say I like "weird" animals, which I dont know why they say that all I have is 3 betas and fish arent weird. So right away I did some research and was stumbled on this site (which was a life saver). And my whole family chipped in to get the right equipment and food to start while he is small. I do need a bigger tank though.

Ah yes... many of us stumbled into HTP the same way. I have to warn you though... we aren't just a website. We're a FAMILY!!

Kudos to you for doing some research! Most of us were told the same things by disreputable dealers. :TurtleMafia: The fact is they don't have a CLUE!!!

We were told the same thing, unfortunately ours were a gift and we got two.  Even more unfortunate was the fact that we went over 9 months before finding HTP.  Kudos to you for doing research right away.

I'm the real idiot... I found 2 of them in swimming pools and brought them home.  They are now the centerpiece of the living room.

Squirt reminds me much of Bill, who we figure is a cooter of some sort.  She doesn't have the fancy belly, her's is plain with just 3 spots, but I can see the RES influence, too.

I think you have a winner, there!

I have to warn you though... we aren't just a website. We're a FAMILY!!

Mom, can I borrow the car Friday night?
I'm the boss of the turtles... really, I am!

They told me so.

Why are you laughing?

aww   looks like ted when I first got him, his ears were pretty yellow too, but not quite that much.
Sounds like you got him the same way I got mine as well.
Glad you're here!

Definitely a slider, as the yellowish "ear" part on the side is thicker than what a cooter has.  I think it looks like a RES, but as BKrazyH said, it may be mixed with YBS as well.

He sure is a cutie and sooo small!!
