growing or not?
« on: January 31, 2010, 03:15:57 pm »
I have my turtles for a month now. The other one is getting bigger, but the other one isnt. I noticed that the smaller one isnt growing. I do not know what the problem is. Could you guys please help me?
Here is what I noticed
-the bigger one its more
-they both bask
-the bigger one's shell is more bumpy in the middle
-the smaller one still looks like the same when I first bought them

Are both turtles housed in the same tank?
How big is the tank each turtle is in?
What are you feeding your turtles?
How often are you feeding your turtles?
How much water is in each tank?
How often do you change the water?
Do you have any pictures that you can post? :hmm:

They are both in a twenty gallon tank.
I feed them pellets that I cut in small pieces and lettuce, carrots that I chop.
I feed them twice a day, 730 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon.
The water is 2/3 of the tank.
I change water every other day because I do not have filter yet.

Is the smaller one the one that was having trouble with it's eyes being swollen? Is the smaller one getting any food? or does the big one eat it all?

Is it possible you have a rubbermaid tub or something similar that one of the turtles could be kept in?
You will also need another heater and another UVB light for basking.
But at least both turtles will be much healthier and happier.
I would also change only about 3/4's of the water every other day.
You may find it to be a lot easier on the turtle's eyes.  :1:

Im always not at home even weekends so I just noticed the bigger one bullying the small one when eating. My dad takes care of the turtles when Im not at home and he said the smaller one does not eat at all. Now i have to separate them. The smaller one eats but I think she (not sure yet of the gender but decided a girl because she isnt aggressive) doesnt like chopped vegetables or pellets.  She is eating the pellets that had dissolved underneath the tank. I change  water but I wait for an hour before I put the turtles in. I cant tell now which one is tur and tel.  When I first had them Tur was the darker one, tel was the smaller one who I think was sick and has lighter shell color. Now the bigger one has the lighter shell, the smaller has the darker shell. Do shell shades change when they grow?

That is part of the reason I had to separate mine too, Then I found out they were much happier apart  It was a good change   :yahoo:
you could always use a tote as Taco suggested a much cheaper way to make a temporary set up I think you can get very large ones at Walmart for under $20

My turtles were the same.  When I got them they were the same size and one just grew way faster then the other.  I discovered that the larger of the two was bullying the smaller away from the food (pellets) and the plants as well.  When I separated them the smalller of the two grew so fast I was amazed, now the original one that was smaller is still way larger then the other.
