Takin in Turtles
« on: February 05, 2010, 07:17:26 pm »
Hello,
:turtle: My name is Patricia and my sister rescued two adult RES from improper care, with the hopes to rehome them. I have rearranged my current reptiles to free up my largest enclosure (3 feet x 3.5 feet x 4 feet tall) and am going to give them a forever home. I don't have any pictures as I told her I would need a few weeks to get the setup done properly and all of the supplies that I'll need, but am looking forward to the expanse of information on these forums and website. I can't wait to meet all of you (figuratively speaking, in the world wide web) and see your turtles and enclosures.  :backdance: :frontdance:

You can get a ton of info by reading the sticky topics (those at the top) of each section. In those you'll also find our Basic Turtle Care pages.

Wonderful that you can look after the turtles.  So is that a tank or a land type enclosure you're talking about? Turtles are great at diving off their basking platform and heading straight for the side of the tank, so make sure they wont be able to bang into anything when they 'slide' into the water  If they are only small, the diameter of 3 x 3 1/2 will suit for awhile, but as they grow, especially if females, you'll need to get something longer. Its great to see you are looking for all the right info to care for your turtles. Well Done !!! :frontdance:
Love my turtles... and the dog :)

Thanks for the great welcomes! I will indeed put pictures up here someday, when I have the internet on my home computer. And for the record, I was planning a half land- half water enclosure. I'm getting the turtles this FRIDAY. So I've been busy setting everything up.
Did I mention the other critters that I have? I didn't think I did. Oh well, to be sure, I have a water dragon, a crested gecko and two long-haired guinea pigs too. Oh, and two toddlers.

:HTPwelcome: the 2 toddlers are critters :snick: lol
just for say i would highly recommend you to not house your turtles together even if they have been together all their lives. They don't need a friend. In the wild they bask together for protection but if housed together the turtles may get aggressive and seriously injure or kill each other and you don't want to have to pay a big vet bill if it could have been avoided. Umm...... also on the half land half water thing i would recommend fill most of tank or enclosure with water and have a small amount of land. sorry for the long not very well worded post :thud:

again :HTPwelcome:

Hey there!  ...and  :HTPwelcome:

Please make sure your tank is an 'aquarium' not a 'terrarium.'  I would hate to see 200gal water and all that glass all over your floor!  ...my goodness that's a BIG tank.

And along the lines of what Turtlebabe said, perhaps you can do something like we did with our 180gal tank.... divide it into 2 tanks with a plexi divider.  It keeps Bill and Ted apart and safe.  It operates as 2 separate tanks but the water flows between both sides.

Even though Taco said it, I will too... we love pictures!   :hyper:  ...and we love to help folks give their turtles the best environment possible!
I'm the boss of the turtles... really, I am!

They told me so.

Why are you laughing?
