bite attempt?
« on: March 09, 2010, 09:04:56 am »
hi guys.
well, one of my turts. panky, i love her a bit more. shes more active and is always staring at me when i get close to the tank, the other pluti boy only run away. but panky im sure loves me :p
to the poing, i was doing some water change and removing carrot residues, yes they get to eat some carrot pieces if i dont give them pellets and leave the carrots a few hours, againg to the poing, while water change and cleaning with a net i have to get my hands onto water, one of the decors is a fake log, poop and food residues uses to get down of it so i have to move it and use net to clean the mess.
at this point usually pluti goes away from my hand as always, panky just doesnt mind me and keep swimming as normal. close to my, far from me, just doesnt mind me.
i suppose it was my fault, but i got a finger close to her head and leave it there like pointing on her, and she came slowly, got closer to my finger, and ZAP, a fast bite attempt, i feeled it and saw it. doesnt hurt cuz shes a baby about 3 inches now. but, could this be dangerous in some time? something i should worry about?
Trying to catch a  nice picture.

Turtles don't have great up close eyesight. She could have thought you were giving her food (another reason why I don't advocate hand feeding). However, she could have been warning you off of her territory. Turtles are EXTREMELY territorial!

Then again she could just be "tasting" you :snick:

A turtle bite isn't really dangerous... well at least not from a small turtle. There are some (such as a snapper) that can take off part of a finger! Your main concern would be if the bite broke the skin. Then you could be subject to whatever bacteria is in the tank or in the turtle's system, such as salmonella. Of course that's true with dog bites, cat bites and scratches or whatever animal.

I think some turts are just "biters" Trixie would just run from us most of the time, but we have 2 people to clean Dixie's tank at all times  She will chase you down and bite given the chance  :snick: Just be aware where your fingers and turt are at all times
